Model of the James Webb Space Telescope, Austin, Texas

You’re looking at a full-scale model of the James Webb Space Telescope, a marvel of engineering. When it launches in 2019, it will be the largest telescope to enter space. Equipped with a massive, gold-coated mirror to capture infrared light, the Webb will peer deep into space and glimpse the first stars, planets, and galaxies that were formed after the Big Bang over 13.5 billion years ago. It will do this all while orbiting the sun from a position about 940,000 miles from Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope is a space telescope that is part of NASA’s Next Generation Space Telescope program, developed in coordination between NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Canadian Space Agency. It is scheduled to launch in 2019 and will be located near the Earth–Sun L₂ lagrangian point. The telescope will offer unprecedented resolution and sensitivity from the long-wavelength visible light through the mid-infrared range.
