Who Knew Getting Married Was This Easy

February 26th, 2009 GµårÐïåñ No comments

We all have seen people getting married on TV shows, movies, plays and so on and I always said that technically since they are saying the words, passing the ring, aren’t they legally married? Well it would always come down to the priest wasn’t real and it was obviously a joke and that was enough. Apparently the standards of common sense are only applicable in this hemisphere.

I guess in Israel, there is no room for jokes and the rules of Statutory Rape don’t apply since you can get married as a joke with no rabbi or priest present and as long as you sleep with her and make sure you are not more than 3 years older, its a done deal, even if your bride is 14. Wow, who knew it would be this easy, right. Now I know you are thinking, this is a joke, he is pulling our legs and being silly, that can’t possibly happen in today’s civilized world, can it?

You don’t believe me, read this:

JERUSALEM – An Israeli girl has become a divorcee at the age of 14.

It all began as a lark, in a schoolyard where a 17-year-old boy recently declared the girl his wife, reciting a Jewish ritual vow in front of witnesses, and she accepted his ring.

That, and what a spokeswoman for Israel’s Rabbinical Courts said was the consummation of their marriage, was enough to make them man and wife in the Jewish state.

Spokeswoman Efrat Orbach, describing the girl as the youngest Jewish divorcee in Israel’s modern history, said the couple was granted a rabbinical divorce this week.

Under Israeli criminal law, sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl are not illegal as long as her male partner is no more than three years her senior.

Original MSNBC Article

So if you are a pedophile in training like the 17 year old, or just want to justify premarital sex without getting in trouble for it, or just like to be efficient and get it done with no fuss, Israel is your destination. Just don’t forget to convert and learn the scriptures well, you don’t want to get it wrong and make it void on a technicality. Mazal tov. I guess now I know how my great grand mother got married at the age of 9, its all about the technicalities.

A Glimpse of Humanity in an Inhumane World

December 9th, 2008 GµårÐïåñ No comments

I received an email from a friend and it was not the usual jokes or funny story or pictures, it was a touching story and I realized that most would just delete it or if they chose to forward it, would only do it to a select few. I read it and found it a touching story and decided that instead of choosing who to send it to, I am going to post it for the world to see and let humanity decide for itself to be human or not.

Please take a minute to read it, understand it and hopefully it will have an impact on your life and you will have an impact on the life of someone unfortunate one day too. Whether god exists or there is a higher purpose in life or not, remember that ultimately you are judged by your own actions and there is no excuse that will get you off the hook.

Read on for two choices: What would you do?… you make the choice. Don’t look for a punch line, there isn’t one. Read it anyway. My question is: Would you have made the same choice?

At a fundraiser dinner for a school that serves children with learning disabilities, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question:

“When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection.”

Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.

“Where is the natural order of things in my son?”

The audience was stilled by the query.

The father continued. “I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.”

Then he told the following story:

Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?” I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps.

I approached one of the boys on the field and asked (not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, “We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.”

Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three.

In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again.

Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.

At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?

Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball.

However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact.

The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed.

The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.

As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.

The game would now be over.

The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman.

Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.

Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman’s head, out of reach of all team mates.

Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, “Shay, run to first!

Run to first!”

Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base.

He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled.

Everyone yelled, “Run to second, run to second!”

Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base.

By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team.

He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head.

Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home.

All were screaming, “Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay”

Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, “Run to third!

Shay, run to third!”

As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, “Shay, run home! Run home!”

Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team

“That day”, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, “the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world”.

Shay didn’t make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!

AND NOW A LITTLE FOOT NOTE TO THIS STORY:

We all send thousands of jokes through the e-mail without a second thought, but when it comes to sending messages about life choices, people hesitate.

The crude, vulgar, and often obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion about decency is too often suppressed in our schools and workplaces.

If you’re thinking about forwarding this message, chances are that you’re probably sorting out the people in your address book who aren’t the “appropriate” ones to receive this type of message Well, the person who sent you this believes that we all can make a difference.

We all have thousands of opportunities every single day to help realize the “natural order of things.”

So many seemingly trivial interactions between two people present us with a choice:

Do we pass along a little spark of love and humanity or do we pass up those opportunities and leave the world a little bit colder in the process?

A wise man once said every society is judged by how it treats it’s least fortunate amongst them.

Zen Wisdom from a Friend

February 5th, 2008 GµårÐïåñ 2 comments

A friend and a soldier was recently in Asia. He said we were in a temple and I was concerned about you, so I went to a Zen master to have him say a prayer for you. He said that the master asked for a picture and he gave him my picture taken in the group. He told me something the Zen master wrote on the back of the picture which he later had translated to mean: “He walks amongst us but he is not one of us” and it seems that the world of zen feels that I have already left, so its just a matter of time then.

Powerful Prayer

January 10th, 2008 GµårÐïåñ No comments

I am among those people who is more spiritual than religious. I know that I don’t pray enough and I do not attend any functions. However, I have always been fair, kind and protective of those around me. I recently came upon a prayer that I find very powerful and no matter what your beliefs, religion or personal moral compass, you will find it helpful and peace inspiring. I hope you find it as helpful and useful as I have.

Dear Lord, I thank You for this day, I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I’m blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you.

I ask now for Your forgiveness. Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. And give the best response when I’m pushed beyond my limits.

I know that when I can’t pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak… Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those that are lost and can’t find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don’t know You intimately. I pray for those that don’t believe.

But I thank you that I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters  and brothers. For each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace , love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees it.

The Wisdom of Age

December 2nd, 2007 GµårÐïåñ No comments

I have always believed that age is just a number and that you are as mature as you want to be at any point in your life. If you take anything away from knowing me, remember that the example of great and pure characters is the only thing that can produce fine ideas and noble deeds.

But with every attempt at greatness comes the problem of weighing the counter darkness. So consider that as our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it. There is no measure for good without evil’s presence.

The trick is to figure out what the consequences are of our actions and weigh the evil against the good we are trying to achieve. If you got that, great, awesome and fantastic, if not then consider that you should try to reach the level of maturity that your age presents.
